Lieux publics develops new urban writings through institutional support, its team, its work premises in the cité des arts de la rue and its actions with audiences. Lieux publics represents 30 years of history at the heart of artistic creation in public space.
As a National Creation Centre, Lieux publics accompanies artists from every discipline who make the city the location, the object and the subject of their productions. Lieux publics is a laboratory for works intended for public space which has developed several instruments aimed at supporting the creation process from the initial writing phase to dissemination.
Lieux publics co-produces twenty projects per year. With works commissioned from artists from every discipline as part of the Sirènes et midi net urban ritual or of a festival, co-productions with other organisations and within the framework of the IN SITU European networks, Lieux publics maintains close links with the artists supported thanks to its nationwide presence and its European associates. From the writing phase to dissemination, dialogue with the artists helps them to find the most suitable site, to undertake the necessary reconnaissance missions, to adapt a project to a specific site, to meet the inhabitants...
With its extensive work premises in the Cité des arts de la rue, Lieux publics emphasises its role as a production centre, hosting large-scale projects and providing a wide range production facilities: rehearsal hall, sound studio, large workshop, assembly hall, outdoor areas… Residences are organised according to the stage of production while also offering the opportunity to organise a public performance.
How should we write for the city? What questions does public space suggest for or impose on an artistic creation? What types of inspiration or constraint are provided or imposed by the architecture, layout, social fabric and history of a place or space? These are the questions to which Remue-méninges – a research-cum-action instrument implemented by Lieux publics in 2001 – endeavours to provide an answer.
Every year, there are five participating artists or troupes. Each has an idea, an intuition, a hypothesis for a show. They may or may not be familiar with the process of creation for public space. Their ideas are strong, promising and open up a number of different means of bringing that embryonic idea to life. Lieux publics accompanies the five projects from their very inception, providing financial support for these oeuvres. Remue-méninges brings together the artists, the Lieux publics team and a group of consultants for a five-day seminar in camera.
From the very outset, Remue-méninges has been hosted by Festivoce and La Casa musicale in Pigna (Upper Corsica). Far, far from the city.
