An outdoor sculpture and sound installation
- Thor McIntyre
- Création 2011

ZAT de Montpellier, quartier de Figuerolles
The Speakers is designed as a loudspeaker that gives a voice to those who are often not heard. In each city, The Speakers provokes residents to talk about real or virtual topics about social, political or historical issues, and shared concerns about the neighbourhood or city, collected via social media or meetings. These recordings are played back in the installation via strange loudspeakers suspended in trees, in a friendly listening space accompanied by mint tea. In Marseille, the installation will temporarily transform Oasis Park in the middle of the Aygalades housing estate into a haven, a place of retreat, an urban oasis where locals whom the artist has met and voices from around the world will come together through the stories of immigrants taken from the Internet. They will recount their real, made-up, past or future journeys in search of a better life.

- An early instigator of sound as a tool for site-specific public art, Thor McIntyre-Burnie has been “quietly” pushing the boundaries of audio arts in the tree’s, streets, parks, bandstands, lighthouses and pockets of our towns and cities ever since. An artist concerned with creating experiences to walk within, sound is however but a part of his largely site-based and immersive works.
